Safe Muse, an organization dedicated to ensuring persecuted artists have a safe environment to work in, was started in Norway in 2013.
The nonprofit, which is funded by the Norwegian government and donations from members, operates on the principles of basic human rights and applying these rights to those who create art and may not be afforded those rights. Throughout their six years of operations, the organization has helped many artists flee their country and assisted them in their new lives. Furthermore, Safe Muse is committed to the observation of crimes against artists around the world, and helps compile statistics on these cases. Their work has been invaluable.
Their highest profile artist in which they have assisted has been Mai Khoi. Safe Muse was able to help Mai flee Vietnam and set up a residency in Norway, while she established herself outside of Vietnam.
